Improvement of living conditions and environment in Leova through reconstruction of local water management

The focus of this project is to improve health and environmental situation in south-western city of Leova. This boarder city with Romania is located on Prut river, therefore this river is source of drinking water for local population but unfortunately also the final destination of waste water from the city. The negative impacts of this system were obvious, including polluted individual sources of drinking water, shallow wells etc.  The second objective of this project aims at improvement of function of local waterworks, which has substantial problems with low treatment effect. 

In 2006, the project has been focused on identification of all necessary data for design of both technologies—waste water treatment plant and waterworks. Feasibility study has been also prepared, that compared different scenarios for both technologies. On the base of selected technical solutions, detailed technical drawings were prepared and submitted for final approval to responsible authorities in the Republic of Moldova. 

The reconstruction of the local waste water treatment plant in Leova took place in 2007.  The new technology occupies only approx. 10% of the previously needed territory, and consumes only fraction of the energy (approx. 25kW compared with 3x650kW).  In addition, removal of phosphorus and also de-nitrification phase have been also included in the treatment process.  The technology has been equipped with remote control unit, only 2 persons of staff are needed now.  This up-gradation will significantly improve health and environmental situation in the area of the city.  In 2008, local water work will be up-graded.

During implementation period of the project, local specialists have been trained in operation and maintenance of the technology, however maintenance will be mainly provided from Chisinau partner company of the project.  Experts from this company were trained in the frame of other Czech ODA project.
